A couple of years ago, my wife and I started down this road and we didn’t even know it yet. We felt like crap, we looked worse, and we were living hand-to-mouth in spite of grossing over $100,000 a year.
We didn’t understand!
First Things First
The first thing we decided was that we needed to get our finances under control (more on that as we go). Along the way, we found we wanted to be more self-sufficient. One of the ways we could reduce the outflow of money was to do more for ourselves. Very soon, it started getting fun!
Next, we spent a few months getting rid of a few extra pounds – 35 for me and…a gentleman never asks. We worked with a health coach while intensifying our exercise.
The New Game
Figuring out how to reduce our dependence on purchased products and services is the name of the new game.
Don’t misunderstand – we still buy what we need, we still go out to eat, and we still have what most would call a “normal” life. We realize, though, that what our grandparents and great-grandparents did out of necessity brought them and their children good lives and often better character.
The ideas that we can:
- make or build something instead of buying it
- make something better if we put some thought and effort into it
- fix things rather than throw them away
We’re here to share our journey with you – the good, the bad, and the ugly of it. We’re becoming more self-sufficient (and healthier, to boot) all the time. We’ll share how we started and how we got where we are. We’ll try some different ideas out and we’ll tell you how it goes. We hope we can inspire you to look at things a little differently. Please share with us what you come up with. We are all in this together; the more we can share, and learn from each other, the better our lives will be.
